Uruguay Clausura Week 7: Fénix-Racing Club Abandoned After Crowd Trouble

Richard Porta of Nacional celebrates

There were some great goals, red cards and an abandoned game in Uruguay this week as Liverpool went four points clear at the top of the table (though Defensor Sporting and Peñarol have a game in hand).

The week began with Defensor Sporting and Peñarol playing out a 0-0 draw on Thursday as they played their game in hand, after the originally scheduled fixture had been postponed due to Copa Libertadores commitments. Both teams' games this weekend were also pushed back for the same reason, giving River Plate and Rentistas a weekend off.

Fénix's match with Racing Club was abandoned with 15 minutes to play due to crowd trouble; with both teams facing possible relegation and the home side losing 3-1, the Fénix fans did more than just vent their frustrations. With 28 minutes to go, play was halted when Fénix supporters started throwing stones and other objects at the visiting Racing fans. Although order was eventually restored, the home fans soon began taking aim at their own players and forced the referee to abandon the game. It has not yet been decided whether the score will stand as the final result or whether the final minutes will be played behind closed doors.

Wanderers are not safe from relegation themselves and suffered another defeat this weekend, going down 3-1 against El Tanque Sisley. Wanderers took the lead from the penalty spot midway through the first half, but Miguel Murillo equalised 10 minutes later before a fierce long-distance free kick from Gonzalo Ramírez gave the visitors the lead in the second half. 13 minutes from time, the win was sealed when Gastón Machado converted another penalty. Cerro Largo scored three times in the second half to overcome Rampla Juniors, with Rino Lucas putting them in front with a hooked finish on 59 minutes. An unmarked Sebastián Sosa doubled the lead with an easy header soon after before Sosa made it 3-0 from the penalty spot in injury time.

Cerrito picked up a 1-0 win over Danubio courtesy of Hector Acuña's 63rd minute header to keep their slim hopes of avoiding the drop alive, before Liverpool beat Cerro 2-1 to consolidate their position at the top of the table. Hernán Figueredo put the home side ahead with a low shot into the bottom corner before the league's leading scorer Diego Vera scored his seventh of the campaign with an excellent finish after showing good strength to hold off his marker. Leonardo Medina pulled one back for Cerro with 15 minutes left with a finish into the top corner but, despite Rodrigo Aguirre's red card for Liverpool in the final 10 minutes, Cerro could not find the equaliser.

The final game of the weekend saw Richard Porta notch a hat-trick for Nacional as they beat Bella Vista 3-1. Porta was in the right place at the right time to poach a goal from close range on half an hour, and made it 2-0 just before half time when he exploited some hesitant defending. Esteban Maga halved the deficit in the second half as the visitors caught Nacional out with a quickly taken free kick, but Porta completed his treble after 62 minutes with a powerful penalty. Although Nacional then went down to 10 men with Maximiliano Calzada being shown a second yellow card, they held on for the win against the relegation battlers.

Uruguay Clausura Week 13: Nacional Beat Peñarol & Liverpool Win Nine-Goal Thriller

There were goals galore in the Uruguayan Clausura this weekend, and there was plenty of excitement both at the top of the table as well as in the relegation battle. The big fixture of the week saw Nacional twice come from behind to beat Peñarol in the clásico, while Liverpool beat Fénix in a true 'partidazo' and Cerrito were relegated after losing to Wanderers. Defensor Sporting picked up their 11th win in 13 games and are now one game away from becoming champions for the first time since the 2010 Apertura.

Wanderers picked up a 2-1 win at Cerrito, finally consigning them to relegation. A superb free kick from Maximiliano Rodríguez gave Wanderers a sixth minute lead, but the hosts drew level shortly after the break through Marcelo Guerrero. They went down to 10 men 10 minutes later though, and Wanderers made the most of the numerical advantage when they retook the lead from Antonio Pacheco's penalty. Cerro also lost 2-1 at home to Danubio, who went in front when Hector Martínez played a good advantage to let Diego Martiñones skip past a challenge and slide a shot under Alvaro Villete. Diego Denis equalised on 56 minutes for Cerro, heading home a free kick, but a minute later Danubio were in front again through Sebastián Fernández and this time held onto their lead.

Liverpool and Fénix played out an extraordinary game that saw the hosts eventually come through 5-4 winners. Fénix were not prepared at all at the outset as Liverpool's Carlos Núñez hooked home from close range in the first minute before Diego Vera slotted home a penalty on nine minutes. However, nine minutes after that it was already 2-2 as Fénix hit back through Cecilio Waterman and Mauro Guevgeozian. Pablo Pereira re-established Liverpool's lead after half an hour, and it stayed that way until half time. Guevgeozian scored his second as he scrambled home Fénix's third after the break, though they were behind again six minutes later after Hernán Figueredo punished them from the penalty spot. Vera showed great strength to make it 5-3 10 minutes from time after latching onto a long ball from Marcelo Mansilla, before Ignacio Pallas was sent off for protesting that there was a foul in the build up. Jonathan Píriz made it 5-4 in injury time, but there was not enough time left for Fénix to grab an improbable 10th goal of the game.

Rampla Juniors' 3-0 win away to Rentistas means that they are still in with a chance of avoiding relegation. Fernando Araújo's team are four points behind Racing Club and Fénix in the relegation table with two games to play, and face the latter at home on the final day of the season. Rodrigo Canosa gave them the lead against the already-relegated Rentistas, before two beautifully chipped goals from Maximiliano Brito sealed their first win in seven. River Plate thrashed El Tanque Sisley 4-0, with all four goals coming in the second half. Sebastián Taborda headed River in front just before the hour, and doubled the lead from the penalty spot 10 minutes later. Martín Icart made it 3-0 with a long range effort that Ernesto Hernández really should have done better with, and the rout was complete seven minutes from the end when Pablo Olivera curled a shot into the corner from the edge of the box.

Bella Vista nearly opened up the title race again but conceded a late, late goal to be defeated by Defensor Sporting by the narrowest of margins. The hosts made life extremely difficult for Defensor and played an excellent game, only to be denied on 89 minutes when Nicolás Olivera turned inside and fired a low shot into Damián Frascarelli's near post to put them within touching distance of the title. Racing Club's late equaliser may prove crucial in the relegation battle as they drew 2-2 with Cerro Largo. After nine minutes, the Racing defence invited Rino Lucas on and the forward needed no second invitation, lashing a shot into the far corner from 25 yards for his ninth of the season. A fine header from Martin Crossa brought the visitors level on 17 minutes, but just after half time Nicolás Guevara gave Cerro Largo the lead again. The provincial side could not hold on though, and three minutes from time Crossa's low shot squirmed under Martín Campaña to make it 2-2.

The final game of the weekend was the clásico between Peñarol and Nacional, which saw Marcelo Gallardo's team emerge 3-2 winners after twice going behind. Rodrigo Mora gave Peñarol the lead just moments after the game started, but Richard Porta made it 12 for the campaign when he converted a 15th minute penalty to equalise. Marcelo Zalayeta restored the hosts' advantage soon after with a volley from the edge of the box, but again they could not hold onto their lead and were pegged back five minutes before half time through Facundo Píriz's close range header. The winning goal came in the 55th minute when substitute Alvaro Recoba stepped up to take a free kick from the corner of the penalty area and whipped it into the far corner to give Nacional the points.
