Uruguay Clausura Week 14: Defensor Sporting Crowned Champions

Defensor Sporting were crowned champions after beating El Tanque Sisley this weekend to pick up their first title since 2010. Meanwhile Rampla Juniors were relegated after a 7-1 home defeat to Peñarol, joining Cerrito and Rentistas in the second division next season.

Fénix and Rentistas shared the spoils in the weekend's first game, leaving both teams still without a win in the Clausura. Marcelo Fernández lashed a shot past Juan Obelar at the end of a good move just after half time to give Rentistas the lead, but 12 minutes from time Jhonatan Ramis weaved his way between defenders before firing a low shot into the bottom corner to deny the visitors the win. Danubio and Cerro Largo drew 1-1 as the visitors made certain of their qualification for this year's Copa Sudamericana, just a season after being promoted. Diego Martiñones had given Danubio the lead from the penalty spot in the first half, but after an hour Rino Lucas notched his tenth of the season to equalise.

Liverpool knew that even a win may not be enough to keep the title race open, and despite their 3-1 win against Cerrito their title dreams are over. Diego Vera converted a 58th minute penalty to give them the lead, and Carlos Núñez swept home from close range to double their advantage 15 minutes later. Juan Carlos Parra pulled one back for the relegated visitors from the penalty spot late on, but in injury time Vera did well to keep the ball in play before sending in a cross for Marcelo Mansilla to head home and make sure of the points. Nacional beat Wanderers 2-0 to stay top of the overall league table, which would give them the advantage in their end of season playoff with Defensor. After a goalless first half, Alexis Rolín headed Marcelo Gallardo's team in front on 50 minutes before Marcos Aguirre made it 2-0 when he skipped round the keeper and found the corner of the net from a narrow angle.

Defensor Sporting were deservedly crowned champions after beating El Tanque Sisley 3-0, going in front just 10 minutes in when Federico Pintos hooked home from a few yards out. Captain Nicolás Olivera scored from the penalty spot two minutes after half time, and the title was sealed when Diego Ferreira extended the lead to three with a well-taken volley with 25 minutes left. The Clausura title is Defensor's first since the 2010 Apertura, and the 10th league title in their history. There is still the overall league playoff with Nacional to come; both teams play a semi-final as winners of the Apertura and Clausura before the winner plays the team that finished top of the overall table. If the winner of the semi-final is the winner of the overall table, no final is required.

Two goals from Javier Guarino gave Bella Vista a 2-0 win at Cerro, while Racing Club came from behind to beat River Plate 4-2. Pablo Olivera's 16th minute strike was cancelled out eight minutes later by Cristian Ortíz's 20-yard strike, and 10 minutes before the break Rodrigo Pastorini turned the game around, showing a neat bit of skill before firing a low shot inside the near post. Anibal Hernández scored a brace after half time to make it 4-1, and though a mistake by keeper Rodrigo Odriozola let Luis Torrecillas reduce the deficit it was far too little far too late for River, who are now unable to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.

Rampla Juniors knew that only a win would keep their faint hopes of avoiding relegation alive, but a Rodrigo Mora-inspired Peñarol destroyed the hosts as they were blown away 7-1 and find themselves in the second division for the first time since 2004. Luis Aguiar headed Peñarol in front after 15 minutes, before Mora scored his first six minutes later as Rampla were hit on the counter-attack. The hosts pulled one back immediately through Maximiliano Brito, but two goals from Marcelo Zalayeta made it 4-1 by half time. The goals kept on coming in the second half, with Mora hitting three more by the 61st minute to complete the rout.
