Uruguay Clausura Week 12: Rentistas Relegated

Defensor Sporting continued their charge towards the Clausura title with another win this weekend, this time against high-flying Cerro Largo, but Liverpool and Peñarol kept up their challenges with their respective wins. Meanwhile Rentistas' relegation to the Segunda División was finally confirmed this week as they lost 2-1 at Liverpool, meaning they cannot now catch Racing Club in the relegation table. It has been on the cards for some weeks now, but a draw last weekend against fellow strugglers Cerrito and two defeats in a few days to Peñarol (4-1 in midweek) and Liverpool have confirmed their relegation.

Bella Vista picked up an important win in the relegation battle with a 1-0 victory against lowly Racing Club. The only goal of the game came in the first half when José Varela drove at the Racing defence before firing a right-footed shot from 25 yards into the bottom corner. Cerrito will not be too long in joining Rentistas in the Segunda as they could only draw 1-1 at home to Fénix, leaving them 19 points from safety with four games to play (as a promoted side, Cerrito's points in the relegation table count double, while they also have a rearranged match to play against Rampla Juniors this week). A horrible mix-up between goalkeeper and defender allowed Mauro Guevgeozian to give Fénix the lead on the hour, but in injury time Cerrito equalised through Francisco Molina.

Nacional's title challenge is all but over after they dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Rampla Juniors. Richard Porta had put Marcelo Gallardo's team ahead in the 55th minute with a well-taken penalty, but moments later Maximiliano Brito had headed the visitors level after making the most of some slack defending. Christian Núñez was sent off for Nacional later in the second half, meaning he will miss next week's clásico with Peñarol. Defensor Sporting left it late to finally see off Cerro Largo but emerged 2-1 victors to stay a point clear at the top with a game in hand. Diego Ferreira's excellent finish on 32 minutes put la Viola ahead, but a header on 80 minutes from Nicolás Guevara saw Cerro Largo pull level. Four minutes later though Defensor were back in front when Federico Pintos clipped a finish over the onrushing keeper, and this time they held onto their advantage.

River Plate and Danubio shared the points as they drew 1-1, with both goals coming in the opening quarter of an hour. Diego Martiñones gave Danubio an 11th minute lead from the penalty spot, but River equalised just a few minutes later when Pablo Olivera was left free in the penalty area to score from close range. Cerro beat El Tanque Sisley by a single goal, which came eight minutes from time when Gonzalo Mastriani converted a penalty.

Rentistas' relegation was confirmed as they lost 2-1 at Liverpool, though they had taken the lead on the stroke of half time when Santiago López flicked home a free kick into the corner. Diego Vera equalised with a penalty midway through the second half though, and he grabbed his second of the game with 10 minutes left with a scrambled finish. Peñarol romped to a 5-1 win against Wanderers to wrap up the weekend, with Fabián Estoyanoff grabbing a brace. Estoyanoff put Peñarol ahead on nine minutes thanks to a poor piece of goalkeeping, but a looping header from Richard Mercado put Wanderers back on level terms four minutes later. The visitors' lead was restored soon after though through Estoyanoff again, and a long-range effort from Luis Aguiar put them in firm command of the game. Rodrigo Mora sealed the points before half time when he scored Peñarol's fourth from close range, and the rout was complete on 87 minutes through Santiago Silva.
