Uruguay Clausura Week 8: Nacional Hit Cerrito For Six While Defensor Score Five

Richard Porta and Nacional celebrate a 6-1 win Richard Porta and Nacional celebrate a 6-1 win

Richard Porta scored his second hat-trick in two games as Nacional cruised to a 6-1 win this weekend while Defensor Sporting also handed out a thrashing to keep the pressure on Liverpool at the top of the table. At the other end of the scale, the relegation picture remains as it was at the start of the weekend as Fénix, Racing Club, Bella Vista, Rampla Juniors and Cerrito all lost while Rentistas' game was postponed.

Peñarol's fixture was again postponed this week as they ready themselves for a long, hard stretch of fixtures. With a backlog of fixtures as well as their final Copa Libertadores engagement, Peñarol will have to face Godoy Cruz, Fénix, Cerro, Liverpool, River Plate, Wanderers and Rentistas before meeting Nacional in four weeks' time.

The weekend began with Fénix going down 2-1 at Wanderers, though the visitors had taken the lead through Mauro Guevgeozian's calmly taken penalty. Jonathan Sandoval equalised on 65 minutes as he somehow scrambled the ball over the line from close range, and 10 minutes later Antonio Pacheco played a neat one-two before slotting a low shot under the keeper to give Wanderers their third win in four. Liverpool continue to lead the way at the top of the table after a 2-0 win against Rampla Juniors. A comical own goal from Rodrigo Canosa gave them the lead, but it was only consolidated in the 78th minute through Diego Vera, despite a second ball being thrown onto the pitch in the middle of the move.

Cerro Largo recorded another win as they came away with a 2-1 victory from their trip to Bella Vista, going ahead through Felipe Klein's close range header. Rino Lucas notched his seventh of the Clausura 10 minutes from time, and although Federico Laens pulled one back just two minutes later it was not enough for the relegation candidates. Defensor Sporting piled on the goals against Racing Club as they won 5-1, going in front after just five minutes through a well-worked goal by Nicolás Oliveira. The Racing defence was carved open again after quarter of an hour to give Ignacio Risso the chance to score, which he took with aplomb, and it was 3-0 before half time when Oliveira curled a free kick into the top corner. The visitors kept the deficit to three until the 78th minute when an innocuous long ball was not dealt with at all by the defence and allowed Federico Pintos to find the far corner, and Juan Carlos Amado tapped home for five after an awful piece of goalkeeping. Rodrigo Pastorini found the net with a free kick from 20 yards with three minutes left, but it was barely even a consolation for a well-beaten Racing side.

River Plate and Cerro shared six goals as they drew 3-3 in a thrilling game. Leonardo Medina opened the scoring when he headed a corner home to give Cerro the lead, and it remained 1-0 at half time. The goals started to flow in the last half hour, with Sebastián Taborda equalising with another header. Cerro reclaimed the advantage two minutes later when Gonzalo Mastriani converted a spot kick, and Jorge García looked to have given the visitors the three points when he made it 3-1 with 13 minutes remaining. River Plate were not done yet though and four minutes from time, Pablo Olivera swept home from the edge of the box after a good knock-down by Taborda. In injury time, it was the former Deportivo man who then pulled River level as he beat the keeper to a hopeful free kick to head into an empty net.

A Diego Martiñones-inspired Danubio picked up the points with a 2-1 win against El Tanque Sisley on Sunday; Martiñones curled a 20-yard shot into the bottom corner inside a minute to give the hosts the advantage from the off. The 27-year-old then lashed home a loose ball in the 50th minute to double the advantage. Although Gonzalo Ramírez tucked home a penalty after 57 minutes, El Tanque could not find the equaliser. Finally, Nacional out-did Defensor for 'goleada' of the week by thrashing Cerrito 6-1, though it was the visitors who scored first through Hector Acuña. Alvaro Recoba equalised with a powerful shot to beat the keeper at his near post, before Richard Porta scored the first of his three goals with a well-placed header. Porta made it 3-1 on the stroke of half time before completing his second successive hat-trick from close range just after the break. Alexis Rolín scored Nacional's fifth with an angled drive on 52 minutes, and the rout was completed when Renato César scored with the definition of a looping header with 20 minutes to go.
