Internacional have told Villarreal that they will not meet their €10 million valuation of striker Nilmar, but they are keen on bringing the 27-year-old back to Porto Alegre.
Nilmar started his career with the Brazilian club and then returned there for two years from 2007-09 before moving to El Madrigal.
He now looks set for a third spell with Inter, but only if relegated Villarreal will agree to lower their asking price.
"We will not pay €10 million," said Inter president Giovanni Luigi. "We are interested and he is a great player, but we are going slowly. I do not want to generate expectation for our fans. It is difficult as he has other options in Europe, but we are examining it."
Inter are studying other financial packages to offer Villarreal but Luigi does not believe they would be able to find a third party to help out.
Nilmar told Radio Guaiba this week that he wants to re-join Inter, despite also wishing to stay in Europe.
